  • The Forgotten ARRI, the Arriflex 16M

There once was a little camera that was made from 1960 till 1969. It was called the Arriflex 16M, or Arri 16M, or Arri M. It looked like this:

It's basically an Arriflex 16S without the 100 ft. internal load capacity, and with a gear driven mag, so it doesn't need the 16S's torque motor. It uses the same camera motors as the 16S, and has the capacity to use a humongous 1200 ft magazine. And they all came equipted with the pilotone generators and marking lights.

I'm adding it to the Arri16S.com web site and just put up a PDF of the Arriflex 16M Operating Manual on the page below:

    Arriflex 16M Operating Manual

Through the generous support of Axel Broda, I've now been trained in servicing the 16M, and through the generous support of ARRI USA, I've been able to acquire the largest inventory of remaining spare parts.

So if you have one of these forgotten ARRI's, and you need service or have any questions about the camera, feel free to ask.

    Thanks,
    -Tim

Unfortunately I cannot recommend a camera that I have not seen or serviced. Check on eBay and you will find what they are currently selling for.

Hello Tim, I just found this thread from google while doing some research on the 16m Arriflex. I found an ad on craigslist for this camera for $500. I will be going to check out the camera tomorrow because unfortunately the guy (seems to be an old guy) doesnt have a digital camera. My question is, would you recommend this camera for someone who is thinking of making short films on film? Ive been trying to look for some 16m video samples online but no luck!

The Arriflex 16M is a cross between the Arriflex 16S and the Arriflex 16BL, it's kind of halfway between the two. It has the same movement as the Arriflex 16S, but does not take internal film loads (100 ft spools inside the camera body). The 16M, like the 16BL, has to be used with a film magazine.

All the lenses that will work on an Arriflex 16S will also work on an Arriflex 16M, so you can look at the film clips on the Arri16S.com website to see what kind of images you can get from the camera (provided you use the same lenses as were used in the tests).

            http://www.arri16s.com/FilmClips1.htm

You can download a free copy of the original Arriflex 16M operation instructions at this link:

Hope that gives you something to go on.

            Best,
            -Tim

I won't comment on price as I don't know the camera. Things to take into account; when was it last serviced, what kind of shape is it in, does it come with any lenses, does it have one or more 400 ft magazines, what motor comes with the camera, does it come with a battery pack, etc.?

All those things would effect price. Also, check on ebay and see what similar camera packages are selling for.
