  • Capturing VHS to DV50

I have a client that would like some VHS tapes captured so the resulting files are DV50. I have only worked with DV-NTSC (DV25) and HDV. Can anyone recommend a workflow and/or capture card so I can accomplish this goal of obtaining DV50 files?

Do I need a "pro" VHS deck with component outs? Then what? AJA KONA? Do I need a TBC?

I have the latest version of Final Cut Studio and a newer Mac Pro. I am willing to rent any hardware needed for this project.

This is all new to me so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Yep AJA Kona and a VHS deck with component out would do it. That said you could just as easily capture s-Video to DV, encode to DV50 afterwards and 99% of the folks would never tell the difference. VHS is a very low quality signal that isn't going to look that different DV25 vs DV50.

      Thanks Noah!

Maybe I'll try the latter and see if the results are acceptable to the client.

      Thanks again,
