Great piece David, thanks for sharing.

We'll leave this up until he gets sued by Lucas and his whole web site gets taken down. Great visual comparison between the two codecs.

In fact, I've received some highly complementary e-mails from folks inside Lucasfilm and ILM. Historically, Lucasfilm's legal department has been really generous with this sort of non-commercial use of their goods, so I'm not worried.

My sort of half-assed demo reel-esque thing is encoded entirely with H.264 and QuickTime Pro. It's available here:

        Jeff,

Your analysis on h.264 was an excellent introductory to a new compression method for me! in fact, so good that i bought quicktime pro last night so i can try it out myself.

i have a question for you. do u happen to know how h.264 stacks up against sorenson squeeze? i would compare it myself, but i unfortunately don't own it. but i'm still debating on whether to invest the $120 or so dollars on it and start using it. right now i have media cleaner so i'm thinking about having a version of my video on h.264 for quicktime users and a version encoded with media cleaner for everyone else. but like i said, i'm still wondering about using sorenson squeeze.

        thanks for your help.

Does anyone happen to know which stacks up better? Sorenson Squeeze or H.264?

          thanks.

Re: Nice Comparison of Sorenson 3 Pro and H.264

Sorenson Squeeze is an application for compressing video.

            H.264 is a video codec.

            Two different animals.

You can compare the Sorenson codec and the H.264 codec. H.264 at least to me has better quality, but Sorenson is more compatible on the web.

Re: Nice Comparison of Sorenson 3 Pro and H.264

I think what you may be asking is for a comparison between Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite and Quicktime Pro, both of which will output H.264 video. Sorenson has their own Advanced Video Codec Pro, (AVC Pro) which is their H.264 compression codec for compressing H.264 video that plays on Quicktime 7 player.

With Squeeze Compression Suite, which is a bit more expensive than the $120 you mention (I think you were looking at the Squeeze for Flash which will not do H.264), you can adjust far more parameters in your compression process, which always results in higher quality compression. But it is a situation where you have to know what you are doing or having all those parameters can really screw you up. And the best way to learn what you are doing is to practice and try different settings and see how they look. As I have said on this forum for years now, video compression is part art and part science and lots of trial and error.

Thank you for the nice comparison. I am a huge fan of H.264, but sometimes I have trouble explaining "why" to clients.

Unfortunately, I have a project that MUST be submitted as an AVI. For various reasons I need to use Sorenson codec. Does anyone know where I can find/buy this as an export option within QT Pro 7? I though I use to use it right out of QT back before MPEG-4 came out, but now I can only choose to export AVI's using cinepak.
Or can you only export and Sorenson AVi using Squeeze?

                  Michael Croog Asks about Compression

I do agree that H.264 is a great codec and better than Sorenson 3. However I miss Sorenson's compression Its funny -The way that H.264 treats its compression treats gradients of color --it almost chops it up the way old low resolution GIFs do. Its funny because I do like it. Any suggestions on settings for H.264?

Here humor me and check out this sample I made which has light rays which still kinda do that "banding" to the gradient light color as it fades away from the center of the light source:
