    Rising Sun Pictures is very excited to offer the long term position of Head of Lighting & Look Development at Rising Sun Pictures.

    Employment periods: This is a long term position, with an early 2018 start.
    Location: Adelaide, Australia. This position is open to Australian and international applicants. Visa and relocation assistance provided where applicable.

    Position Overview
    The Head of Lighting & Look Development will create, monitor, direct and influence wide-ranging aspects of high-end lighting & look development production, including both texturing and shading, for live action feature films. You are an expert people manager, and a natural team player. You inspire people through your extensive vfx knowledge, clear communication and by setting and maintaining high quality standards. You have strong attention to detail and provide direct, consistent and regular feedback to your team to encourage, develop, and mentor at every level.

    You are a forward thinking professional who can anticipate problems while prototyping and implementing solutions. Your success comes from engaging all areas of production, communicating clearly through asset and shot evolution. Your departmental solutions improve overall efficiency at a show and facility level.

    The strength of your creative eye, excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills are highly regarded by your peers. You provide confidence to production that your team has absolute clarity in what is expected of them in terms of professionalism and shot delivery.

    RSP is a Houdini/Arnold and Maya/Mari based lighting & look development facility, all candidates must have expert knowledge of these software packages.

    • Create, manage, support and supervise key aspects of the lighting & look development pipeline in the following areas; lighting, and texturing & shading.
    • Oversee the creation and delivery of lighting set-ups, and textures & shaders, that match the creative and technical brief.
    • Ensure your department is producing work as efficiently as possible, meeting the creative briefs and completing lighting & look development at the highest standard.
    • Delegate work and responsibilities to team seniors as required.
    • Work closely with the department coordinator, and delegate tasks as required.
    • Manage, support and supervise all team members. Ensure artists are meeting the needs of the show and check delegated tasks are accomplished to the expected standard.
    • Work closely with team leads and supervisors to determine downstream delivery requirements.
    • Work closely with the production management team on setting delivery schedules and quality standards
    • Work with production to create technical solutions to ensure deadlines are met in accordance to resource parameters.
    • In collaboration with the pipeline group, drive and prioritise requirements for pipeline development and work flow enhancement.
    • Define department structure; work with the CG Supervisor and Recruitment to determine hire needs.
    • Provide clear briefs and daily feedback to your team.
    • Run team dailies and set one-on-one meetings.
    • Review and QA teamís work ahead of internal and external delivery, ensuring it meets creative and technical notes. Immediately address ineffective delivery.
    • Actively mentor and develop all team members under your supervision.
    • Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, discussion and work ethic.

    Required skills and experience
    • Minimum 7 years senior/lead lighting and/or look development experience.
    • Expert people management/leadership and organisational skills.
    • Expert user of production ready software including Houdini, Arnold, Maya, and Mari. RSP operates in a Linux system environment.
    • Natural problem solving and lateral thinking skills.
    • Complete understanding of naturalistic light and motion with a focus on dynamic and natural phenomenon.
    • Real world understanding of physics, movement, proportion, depth, scale, colour, and physical space.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Superior level of attention to detail and strong eye for aesthetic composition.
    • Maintain a calm and professional demeanour in a deadline focused work environment.
    • Visual Effects, Fine Art, Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics or related tertiary qualification may be required for international applicants.
